Accessible prescription technology for persons with visual impairment and others

Yesterday I joined the ACB local chapter, Indiana. There was a presentation about accessible prescription technology/legislative initiative Accessible perscription technology/legislative initiative by Ms. Vicky R. Horstman, an accessible technologies consultant and trainer, Votech Rehab LLC. Think the information is interesting and just want to share.
Below is my brief/dirty notes.

Discussion about Some possible technology sollutions that already exist. There are both low and high technologies available.
Below are 4 types of demonstrated devices. (The first 3 units are the low cost prescription tools)

1. Tel-Rx Talking Prescription Recorder

- 20 Sec for recording.
- Ask people to do recording to the device and attach it with your medication.
- Button on the top right and rubber band on the left.
- If slide button at the back you will erase all of the information.
- $14.95 per unit.
- Cos’ recording is limited, you may not get the whole info.

2. Talking Labels device

- There’s a button at the back together with recording button.
- More designed/fashionable.
- 20 Sec. for recording.
- $12.95
- Much better/clearer sound.
- Work on battery.
- It There is a clip to stick with the box.

3. Talking Rx

- Bottle is put inside this unit.
- Limited to 20 sec. for recording.
- $25 per unit.
- It can be adjusted by 3 sizes of the unit for you to choose.

4. Script talk
(this is the unit that Walgreens is testing).

- $425 for the pharmacy
- $225 for the users.
- Working with AFB and mediCare support.
- Large unit, just hang it on the wall.
- There’re buttons for volume, skipping (by details), on/off, read/stop, etc.
- Pharmacist doesn’t need to rerecord anything. The computer will generate the label. Just scan the label with there.
- The unit comes with hardware, software, and label that will be used to stick with the unit.
- Can work on both electrical or plugin.
- First unit come with 100 lables.

Summary:
These devices can be beneficial to not only persons with low vision, but also, the ones who have reading disability, or the eldery people.
Only 10% of VIP who can read Braille in the US.
